"Life is a journey, not a destination." - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Where will this train take you?

Me?
I am finally in university, studying something that I am passionate about.
Music.

"Music?" you may ask.
I know it isn't business, or medicine, or engineering or anything that people claim will get you a job (because there totally aren't any jobs for musicians out there in the entire world - sarcasm intended), but it is my passion.

Well, at least I think it is.

That was my thought prior to entering this program at this university.
I hadn't always known where my train would take me, where I would make a stop for post-secondary education. I wasn't good at math or science - those were out of the question, business and the arts (pertaining to society) was my strong suit but I wasn't particularly interested in pursuing them as a career. Languages and media? Potentially. Performing arts? Definitely.

But typically, when a child tells their parents they want to pursue the performing arts, they dismiss it as a fantasy; impractical. So I never really thought of it as an option. Until my mom told me about music therapy and supported me with this career choice.

Disregard all of what I just said (or...maybe don't), because the focus is after getting into the music program, not before. But knowing my 'before' will help complete the picture (I think).

I am a piano major. Needless to say, I disliked playing as a kid, until I had enough techniques to play songs that I enjoy playing. Like, pop songs, for example. Or mood music. I did the traditional RCM syllabus, completing the AR level just this past summer. For the number of years I have been playing piano, I had not thought to explore further into the subject - Classical approach, you know what I mean? My daily life did not revolve around music, minus the hour I grudgingly spent practicing each day. Simply stated: I did not enjoy music as much as I should.

With the help of some amazingly talented musicians - my boyfriend's younger sister, himself, and most definitely my university piano prof - I learned to realize that I had just merely grazed the surface of music. There is so much more I can do. Call it a revelation, I decided to try other aspects of music: composing, improvising, transcriptions of popular music, learn another instrument, etcetera

When I thought I had reached my destination, I realized that there is still so much more ahead of me.
Currently, I am aboard the train, building my path along the way.
From a kid who just simply played the piano in order to complete levels, to a musician who is playing for enjoyment, and exploring all aspects of music.

Life is a journey, not a destination.
Don't forget to enjoy the stops along the way; it won't be long before you continue on your journey and set foot somewhere else.
